Engine won't turn over

Hi guys, had a problem with my TL wagon today....When I went to start it all the lights on the dash came on as normal, but the engine would not crank over...battery was not flat at all, but starter was not working....no solenoid noise just silence....I repeatedly moved the gear shifter from park to drive, but still nothing....after 10 mins of trying it suddenly fired up and is now starting fine....any ideas what the issue is?....cheers

Check your battery connections. Probably some corrosion. Fix it before it happens again!

Yeah did that and everything seemed OK....I'm wondering if it could be the module that stops the car from being started in drive or reverse

I understood that the immobiliser allowed cranking but not to fire the ignition. Im not saying it is the immobiliser, but the computer control exercised by the immobiliser function applies its influence directly in the ECU. For the computer to stop the cranking would require some heavy electrical switch gear, so I dont think thats likely.
According to the circuit diagram for the TL, the 'START' position of the IGN switch supplies 12 volt directly to the starter motor via the inhibitor switch on the auto gear selector. Shouldnt be too hard to suss it out.

Two weeks ago I had a "NO START" condition with my 190,000km TL.

The engine would quite happily crank, but it would not start.

The culprit, found the next day, was the wire from the immobiliser to the ignition key antenna.

After deciding to investigate myself and removing the under dash panel, unplugging and reattaching the immobiliser wire resulted in an immediate start.

It has been fine since then.

I was very lucky to stumble upon the cause of the problem quickly.

A slow build-up of corrosion between the terminals would be the cause.

I live very close to the ocean, which possibly would accelerate corrosion build-up.

I would suggest against your problem being the immobiliser - see next post.

To the OP, I would rule out the immobiliser.

It is possibly the inhibitor switch - on top of the transmission.

Try gently moving the transmission shifter back and forth, in either "P" or "N", whilst having the ignition key turned to the "start" position.

An out of adjustment or worn inhibitor switch will sometimes respond to this.

You still have to fix it eventually, but you might get out of trouble for a short while doing this.

Thanks for the replies Rumpfy and lead foot...I did read lead foots post before starting this one and came to the same conclusion that it probably isn't an immobiliser problem...I'm starting to think it was a jammed starter or the inhibitor switch....thanks again guys.
